The Economy and Elections

The Economy is one of the biggest issues during an election. For the election on November 2, 2010, it is predicted that the economy is one, if not the biggest issue. The Democrats currently in office are going to bear the blame for the high unemployment rate and the languishing economy.
Democrats were optimistic about the economy at the beginning of 2009, but that optimism had ended up hurting them. They believed that the economy was on the way to recovery, and therefore it was no longer the top priority. The Democrats moved on to different issues and left the economy alone, this was the wrong decision. When the White House received the job report in November 2009 it looked hopeful, because almost one million jobs had been created—because of the census—but since May of 2010 almost four hundred thousand jobs have vanished. This drastic change explains the reason behind the predictions that the Republicans will gain the majority in the House.
President Obama is trying to explain that his eight hundred million dollar stimulus package has helped the economy move from recession to recovery. Republican and some Democrats are thinking more about the rising budget deficits and federal debt than about the possible rebound of the economy.  They believe that government needs to stop spending money, and will not be convinced that President Obama is doing the right thing for the economy. How can President Obama help the economy without spending more money? Well it is too late for him to develop a plan in time for the midterm elections.

  1. "The Economy And Elections" highlights some points that I tend to agree with. I believe that not just the Democrats, but our whole government just sort of turned a blind eye to our economy because they had too high hopes that the stimulus had worked. What you bring up is a good point, and I'd like to think that the people running this country know what they are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on, money that we will eventually end up paying ourselves, and you bring up a good question.... will more government spending help our economy or hurt it? A tough question considering not even experts can agree on this matter, and certainly one weighing heavily on our President.
